Why I'm Running

I am a passionate defender of New Hampshire’s best values – its deep commitment to our democracy and constitutional rights, its unique natural environment, and most importantly, our wonderful Granite Staters. I would like to continue that work and that is why I am running for re-election.

I was born and raised in an industrial town in North Central Ohio to parents who emphasized the importance of education and self-sufficiency. At a time when there were few women in the medical field, much less in women’s healthcare, I graduated from The Ohio State University College of Medicine and completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. I practiced and taught for 37 years in Columbus, Ohio, providing prenatal and maternal care and gynecologic treatment for a mixed practice of insured and uninsured patients with a range of incomes, backgrounds and nationalities.

After visiting family in the area since the mid-1990s, my wife Sherrill and I planned to retire to Campton and purchased a home here two decades ago. We love Campton for its great natural beauty, small town charm, and the people who work so hard to steward its great natural resources.

I currently serve as a Conservation Commissioner, a member of the Pemi River Local Advisory Council, and a member of the Campton Zoning Board of Adjustment. I see my roles in these organizations as protecting the natural environment balanced with our town’s sustainable growth.

Whether it is by serving on a House committee, statewide commission, or a local board, I am committed to fighting for our democracy and for equal rights and due process under the law. I support environmental protection as well as our communities’ climate resiliency. I’m working hard to improve access to affordable healthcare, including reproductive healthcare for women. My votes on health policy and the environment are based on scientific fact. I am dedicated to ensuring that New Hampshire is welcoming and supportive of all who grew up here and all who come from other places to work here and contribute their time, energy and cultural diversity. To that end, I support public education, affordable housing for all, and programs for seniors that promote healthy aging.

Sherrill and I have two daughters and three grandkids. We are indeed fortunate to live in Campton, where we enjoy the scenic White Mountains, gardening, and photography.

What I'm Running to Protect

Our Democracy
New Hampshire’s motto is “Live Free or Die.” I take that to mean that we fight for the sanctity of everyone’s right to vote and participate safely in our elections, free from harassment. Every person has a right to live their life with equal protections and dignity. Our democracy is under serious threat from voter suppression, dark money in politics, foreign interference, and misinformation. I support measures that protect and strengthen our democratic institutions.

Women’s Reproductive Rights
As a physician who attended to women as they faced many challenges including infertility, lost pregnancies, and difficult health choices, I staunchly defend a woman’s right to make her own reproductive health decisions, including access to safe and legal abortion. Women’s reproductive rights are human rights and must be guaranteed by codification in the New Hampshire State Constitution. When re-elected, I will continue to oppose any attempts to restrict or undermine reproductive rights and will work to ensure access to comprehensive reproductive healthcare for all women, regardless of their economic status.

Our Environment
I believe our natural environment must be protected for Campton to thrive and sustainably grow into a community that supports year-round affordable living. We need qualified individuals without conflicts of interest appointed to all state regulatory agencies that impact our environment to ensure that they are working to protect our children’s future rather than exploiting it.

Public Education
From a young age, my parents impressed upon me the importance of education and the effect it can have on a family’s security. We need to invest in our public schools! Education is the key to a well-trained workforce, technology innovation, successful entrepreneurship, and affordable healthcare. It all begins with accessible quality education for every child, regardless of their family’s income or address. Voucher programs have a history of breaking budgets while helping families who can already afford private school.

Affordable Housing
New Hampshire suffers from a lack of affordable housing. In Campton our young adults are especially affected by this problem, and it puts a strain on our ability to attract and maintain a stable workforce. The state should incentivize the construction of starter homes and rental units while respecting local ordinances and control.

Public Safety
Gun violence is the leading cause of death for children in the United States and the increasing violence in our country requires a solution. There is no reason for civilians to possess weapons that are intended for war. I believe there should be a ban on assault-style weapons, and we should pass common-sense gun regulations like red flag laws and ghost gun bans.

With your vote for my re-election, I will build on my first term experience serving on the House Health and Human Services and Elderly Affairs Committee, as a legislative appointee to the New Hampshire Commission on Aging and the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program Advisory Council, and as a co-chair of the Systems of Health Care for Healthy Aging. I shepherded a bill to improve propane and heating oil consumer protections through both chambers and on to the Governor’s desk. That bill (HB 1262) is just the beginning, and I hope to work on amendments which will broaden its contractual applications.
